Disable location tracking for advertisers on your iPhone

October 18, 2012 by quirkyuncle

For iOS6, Apple has introduced an anonymous ID for your device that will allow advertisers to track your location, allowing them to provide you with targeted advertising. The feature is turned on, by default and the setting is very counter-intuitive.

As of this posting, Apple has not disclosed exactly how this feature is used. CNET provides a more in-depth analysis of the feature here.

If you are not interested in your location being given out, you can disable the feature, as follows:

  1. Go to Settings > General; then, click About.
  2. Scroll down and click on Advertising (it’s near the bottom).
  3. Make sure that Limit Ad Tracking is set to ON. (It is kind of weird, because ON means that ad tracking is off.)
